The Houses in Rochester, and What Goes Wrong With Them
Rochester has more of our completed projects than any other town, and it is also the one where the property demands the most care. Around the high street and the cathedral there is a lot of older and listed housing, where the wrong material does real damage. A hard modern mortar on soft old brick, or a cement render on a solid wall that needs to breathe, traps moisture and causes the very damp it was meant to cure. So in Rochester we specify to the age of the building. Lime based renders and appropriate mortars on the older stock, natural slate where a roof was slate to begin with, and leadwork done properly rather than sealed with mastic.     Yes, and Rochester has a lot of it. We use materials appropriate to the age of the building, such as lime render and soft mortars, because modern equivalents can damage old walls. If consent is needed we will flag it before we begin.
